Give WhatsApp Chats to Your Lawyer: What to Send

This is the handover step: what to put in the package and how to send it. The checklist for preparing the material is on the lawyer checklist page.

Not legal advice. This page is general information. Whether a court admits or relies on a chat is for the court; convokeep does not promise admission or any outcome. Ask a qualified lawyer about your case.

What should the package contain?

  1. The original export file, unedited.
  2. A readable PDF of the relevant stretch, if you made one.
  3. The SHA-256 of the original, written in a short note with the date and the phone you exported from.
  4. A one-page timeline in your own words, kept separate from the chat.

Should I send screenshots too?

Ask your lawyer. A screenshot shows part of a screen; an export keeps the thread. See screenshots vs export.

How do I send it?

Ask the lawyer how they want it. Many firms have a secure portal or preferred route; do not assume. Avoid posting the chat on social media or in public places.

What about other people's information?

A chat may contain names, numbers and photos of third parties. Ask your lawyer about redaction before it goes further.

Do I send the entire chat or an extract?

Keep the full original, and ask the lawyer which extract they want. They decide what to use.

What can I promise?

Nothing about the outcome. A tidy package saves time; it does not decide admissibility. See what a hash proves.

Ready to try it?

Drop your exported chat file on the convokeep app for a free preview. The first 3 pages are free (watermarked, no integrity page); saving the full PDF is a one-time paid feature. No chat or attachment is uploaded: the file is read in your browser. To check later that a file is unchanged, use the hash checker.
