How to Keep the Original KakaoTalk Chat, What to Do With the Exported File

After you export a chat, what you do with the file matters. The simple habit of not touching the original makes things easier to explain later.

Not legal advice. This page is general information. Whether a court admits or relies on a chat is for the court; convokeep does not promise admission or any outcome. What is needed differs by case, so check with a lawyer or the Korea Legal Aid Corporation (☎132).

What is the original?

It is the file first created by the export. A file you opened, edited and saved is not the original. Leave the original as it is, and do PDF conversion or redaction on a copy or in the app.

Where should I keep it?

Do not keep it in only one place; keep it in two or more (for example, your computer and an external drive). Put the export date in the folder name, and write a short note of which device you exported from and when.

How does recording the hash value help?

If you calculate the file's SHA-256 with the hash checker right after exporting and write it down, you can later compare it to see whether the file is unchanged. A hash only shows that the file has not changed since the export. It cannot show that nothing was deleted before the export. More.

Should I keep the chat on my phone?

Whether you may delete the original chat from your phone differs by case, so check with a lawyer or the responsible agency. Export it first before changing devices or deleting the app.

Can I rename the file?

Renaming alone, with the content unchanged, does not affect the hash. It is still easier to explain if you note the original name too.

Can I keep it in the cloud?

Where to store the file is your choice. convokeep does not send files to a server, but any cloud service you use follows that service's own policy.

Ready to try it?

Drop your exported .txt file on the convokeep app for a free preview. The first 3 pages are free (watermarked, no integrity page); saving the full PDF is a one-time paid feature. No chat or attachment is uploaded: the file is read in your browser. To check later that a file is unchanged, use the hash checker.
