Export KakaoTalk Chats, Android, iPhone and PC in One Place

The menu for exporting a KakaoTalk chat sits in a different place on each device. This page gathers Android, iPhone and PC in one guide. More detailed steps per device are in how to export and PC export.

Not legal advice. This page is general information. Whether a court admits or relies on a chat is for the court; convokeep does not promise admission or any outcome. Ask a qualified lawyer about your case. In Korea, for example, you can also ask the Korea Legal Aid Corporation (☎132).

Which device should I export from?

Export from the device that holds the chat. Export a chat you read on your phone from the phone, and a chat kept in KakaoTalk for PC from the PC. Even for the same chat room, the period that remains can differ by device, as the questions below explain.

How do I export on Android?

In the chat room, open the menu (≡), tap Export chat contents, then choose Send text only. If you need photos too, choose Send all messages, but the size gets large, so text only is recommended when you need the words. Choose a destination you can open on a computer, such as your own email or Drive. Menu names may differ a little by app version.

How do I export on iPhone?

From the chat room menu (≡), go to Chat contents, choose Send text messages only, and pick where to save, such as email or the Files app. The options for photos may differ by app version, so follow the names you see on screen.

How do I export in KakaoTalk for PC?

In a chat room in KakaoTalk for PC, open the menu (≡), then tap Chat contents and Export chat, and choose a folder to save to. A file saved on the PC is already on your computer, so there is no need to move it.

How do I move the exported file to a computer?

If you exported on your phone, use Chat with myself, email (write to yourself), a cloud drive or USB, whichever is easiest. Once it has moved, do not open and re-save the file; it is better to leave it as the original. Work from a copy.

Can I load an export file back into KakaoTalk?

Export is a feature for reading and keeping. If you want to bring a chat back on a new phone, look into KakaoTalk's backup feature separately. This page only covers exporting in order to organize chats as a PDF.

What if the export fails or the email does not arrive?

If you sent it by email, check the spam folder first. If a long chat gets stuck, try again with text only. If that still fails, update the app to the latest version and try again.
