How to Print a WhatsApp Chat
Screenshots break up a conversation and cut off messages at the edge of the screen. A better way is to export the chat, turn it into one PDF with the convokeep app, and print that file from your computer. Everything happens in your browser.
What you get
A PDF of the whole chat with the sender and time on every message, grouped by day. Before you save you can search inside the chat, pick a date range, redact a message and rename participants. The free preview shows the first 3 pages with a watermark and no integrity page; the full export is paid.
- One file, not a pile of screenshots: pages run in order, so nothing is missing between two captures.
- Dated and searchable: find a word on screen first, then print only the days you need.
- Clean for paper: messages are laid out as text, so they stay readable on a black-and-white printer.
Step-by-step export
Start on your phone, because WhatsApp only creates the export there. WhatsApp creates the export file on your phone, as a plain .txt file or, when you attach media, as a .zip. Both work here. Menu names can differ slightly between app versions.
- iPhone: open the chat, tap the contact or group name, tap Export Chat, choose Without Media (or Attach Media), then Save to Files.
- Android: open the chat, tap the ⋮ menu, then More, then Export chat. Choose Without media or Include media, then save the file or share it to Drive.
- PC: WhatsApp Desktop has no export button. Export on your phone first, then continue with step 4.
- Saved the file on your phone? Move it to your computer. Email it to yourself, put it in a cloud drive such as Google Drive, iCloud or OneDrive, or copy it over USB. Then drop the .txt or .zip file on the convokeep page.
- Long chats: WhatsApp exports up to 40,000 messages without media, and only about 10,000 with media. For a very long chat, export without media.
Printing the PDF
Once the PDF is saved, open it in any PDF viewer on your computer and choose Print. Pick A4 or Letter to match your paper, and keep the scale at 100% so the text stays at its natural size. Print one page first to check the margins, then print the rest.
Privacy
The file is read and the PDF is built in your browser. No chat or attachment is uploaded and there is no account. The site counts visits and exports with cookieless analytics, and those events never contain message text, names or file names. Read the full privacy policy.
Keepsake vs Record
Keepsake is a book-style layout meant to be saved or printed. Record adds page numbers, a sender and time stamp on every message, and a SHA-256 integrity page for the source file and for the PDF. For a printout you will hand to someone, such as a lawyer or an employer, Record gives you page numbers to point to. For a chat you simply want on paper, Keepsake reads more like a book. A hash shows that a file was not altered after it was made. It does not prove that the original chat is authentic or complete, and convokeep is not legal advice. See the disclaimer.
FAQ
- Do I have to take screenshots?
- No. Export the chat from WhatsApp and convokeep turns it into one PDF, so you print a single file instead of dozens of screenshots stitched together.
- Can I print only part of the conversation?
- Yes. Pick a date range before you save, and the PDF contains only those days. You can also hide single messages that you do not want on paper.
- Can I print straight from my phone?
- You can, but a computer is easier. Move the exported file to your computer, make the PDF there, then print it from any PDF viewer.
- Does the printout show who wrote what?
- Yes. Every message carries its date, time and sender, and messages are grouped by day, so a printed page is easy to follow and easy to cite.
