Turn a WhatsApp Chat into a Keepsake
Some conversations are worth more than the phone they live on. A trip, a family group, the last year of messages with someone you miss. With the convokeep app you can turn an exported WhatsApp chat into a book-style PDF to save or print, without sending a single message to anyone's server.
What you get
A PDF of the whole chat with the date, time and sender on every message. Before you save you can search inside the chat, pick a date range, hide a message you would rather leave out and rename participants. The free preview shows the first 3 pages with a watermark and no integrity page; the full export is paid.
- Grouped by day: the chat reads in order, like pages of a diary.
- Only what you choose: keep a single summer, or the whole story.
- Names you recognise: replace a phone number with the person's name.
Step-by-step export
Take your time with this part; it is the only fiddly one. WhatsApp creates the export file on your phone, as a plain .txt file or, when you attach media, as a .zip. Both work here. Menu names can differ slightly between app versions.
- iPhone: open the chat, tap the contact or group name, tap Export Chat, choose Without Media (or Attach Media), then Save to Files.
- Android: open the chat, tap the ⋮ menu, then More, then Export chat. Choose Without media or Include media, then save the file or share it to Drive.
- PC: WhatsApp Desktop has no export button. Export on your phone first, then continue with step 4.
- Saved the file on your phone? Move it to your computer. Email it to yourself, put it in a cloud drive such as Google Drive, iCloud or OneDrive, or copy it over USB. Then drop the .txt or .zip file on the convokeep page.
- Long chats: WhatsApp exports up to 40,000 messages without media, and only about 10,000 with media. For a very long chat, export without media.
Once the PDF is made, keep the original .txt or .zip export as well, in a second place such as a cloud drive. The PDF is the copy you read; the export is the source.
Privacy
The file is read and the PDF is built in your browser. No chat or attachment is uploaded and there is no account. A private conversation stays private. The site counts visits and exports with cookieless analytics, and those events never contain message text, names or file names. Read the full privacy policy.
Keepsake vs Record
Keepsake is a book-style layout meant to be saved or printed. It suits family chats, trips and memorials. Record adds page numbers, a sender and time stamp on every message, and a SHA-256 integrity page for the source file and for the PDF. It is better when you need to show someone dates and senders, such as a lawyer. A hash shows that a file was not altered after it was made. It does not prove that the original chat is authentic or complete, and convokeep is not legal advice. See the disclaimer.
FAQ
- Can I do this for a chat with someone who has passed away?
- Yes. Many people use it for exactly that. You need the chat on your own phone; export it, and the PDF keeps every message in order with its date.
- Will the PDF look like a book?
- The Keepsake layout is book-style: messages grouped by day and set for easy reading, on pages you can save or print.
- What about photos and voice notes?
- Export with or without media; both files are accepted. In a text-only export, photos and voice notes show as short placeholders such as [image].
- Is anything stored on a server?
- No. The file is read and the PDF is built in your browser, with no account. Keep your original export somewhere safe yourself.
