Organizing KakaoTalk Chats for Workplace Harassment, Keeping Your Own Records
Organizing the messages you received at work makes it easier to put your account in order when you report or seek advice. This page covers only how to organize them and the general contacts; it does not judge whether something counts as harassment.
Not legal advice. This page is general information. Whether a court admits or relies on a chat is for the court; convokeep does not promise admission or any outcome. What is needed differs by case, so check with a lawyer or the Korea Legal Aid Corporation (☎132).
Which records should I keep?
Mainly the KakaoTalk chats, texts and emails you received or sent. Keep as the original an exported file that shows the date, sender and content. Moving company work materials to a personal device may violate company rules or the law, so check first.
How do I write opinions in the records?
Leave the chat record as it is. When you write a separate memo in time order, it reads best if you write only what happened. Do not add opinions to the chat PDF.
Where do I report or ask for advice?
Korea's Labor Standards Act has provisions on workplace harassment (Articles 76-2 and 76-3). We could not read the text of the articles in this check, so check the current wording yourself. You can get guidance from the Ministry of Employment and Labor's customer consultation center (☎1350, paid call, weekdays 09:00-18:00) (checked on the Ministry's website).
What about group chats?
Workplace group chats mix in other people's names and information, so read organizing group chats first.
Is there anything to do before I leave the job?
After you leave, you may not be able to access work accounts. Export in advance the personal chats left on your own device. For taking out work materials, check company rules and the law.
Will it count as evidence?
Whether it is accepted is decided by a court or similar body. This page does not promise any result.
